help a girl out

It really bothers me that the slang ‘sheeple‘ has such a negative connotation. I always want to call y’all it but I feel like I’d be insulting you, and, why would I want to insult you guys when I like you more than 99% of the people I meet/know in person? (Or a bigger question – why does everyone I know in person seem to suck so much?) So, since my mind goes to the word every time I sit down to write, I figured if I use it one time maybe the obsessive thought will go away.  Don’t worry, I’m not trying to say you guys have no brains and follow things blindly. It’s solely because this blog is called The Shameful Sheep. If I wanted to insult you I’d come up with something a lot wittier – like calling you a poopyhead or something.

So, here we go…. HAPPY MONDAY, SHEEPLE!

sheeple1

I moved to a self-hosted site so I could have more freedom to do what I want and expand a little. Today I wanted to share with y’all some ideas I have. They are in the rough draft phase, so I’m hoping someone will have some cool ideas. Especially for the giveaway section.

Over the past month or so I’ve been trying to come up with a cool way to do a giveaway every month. It will most likely just be an Amazon gift card or cash via PayPal or something. (Because who would turn that down?) I like the idea of giving a theme for a photo contest and having people vote on which one they like most. Example: the theme is funny, so people will send me their photos of their drunk friends with writing on their faces, or their kids with cake frosting smeared into their eyebrows, or whatever else they think is funny. Then I’ll pick my favorites and put them up so everyone can vote on them. Winner gets the money. Thoughts? Any other ideas? I’m trying to think of things that are slightly fun/interactive and not just “guess what number I’m thinking of.”

I also want to start doing a sort of advertising around here. I know this is the land of aspiring authors and self publishers, so I thought it would be kinda fun  to start a book club. I’ll put your book on my front page with a link to your site/amazon. Make an actual page on my site dedicated to the books in the club. Do an interview. (I also want to do something similar with bloggers wanting to get their site out there. Have a spot on my front page/make a ‘cool kids blog’ page/interview(or maybe a guest post?) I’m open to ideas/suggestions. (If you want to try either of these out, or ask me questions about it, email me here: blair@theshamefulsheep.com . The first month or two will definitely be discounted as I get everything set up and in order. I’ve been slacking on checking emails lately, but I promise I’ll respond faster from now on!)

Everyone else: don’t worry. I promise any sort of changes won’t take over my usual posts.

I think this is the longest post I’ve ever written. Thanks for hanging in there! Hope y’all had a great Mother’s Day, and have a great week ahead 🙂

  2. Maybe a video challenge? My site tends to be not so PC with thousands of grammar errors and I’m as new to the blogging thing as a politician is to confession lol. Not even sure about the whole catogory thing when posting .Im sure there will be some great ideas from fellow bloggers .Enjoy your site.

Love those sheeple in the picture. They look very excited to get where they’re going. Did you draw your logo? Great sheep. Unfortunately, I hear, I seem to give crappy advice. Hopefully someone other than me will come through for you on that!

My husband drew it! I love the sheep, it makes me laugh every time I see it. Hey, I’m sure ALL of your advice isn’t crappy haha

  4. I’ve expanded to a self-hosted site as well but plan to keep both. I’ve been thinking about some of the same things. I’ve got stacks of books and more in boxes and think of giving away random picks on a monthly basis as a kind of couched selfishness – you get to clean up my stuff and are happy about it.

I find that the self-hosted site takes more work which takes away from writing time but, hey, only bored people sleep.

    Good luck. I’ll be reading.

That’s a great idea to give things away, I might steal your idea with something else though. Thanks! I’m curious – why are you keeping both? I’ve seen other people do that as well, but I’m not sure what the advantages are.

      1. I keep my Monkey Dance site that I use to write whatever I like. I have more followers and it appeals to more people. My other site is where I have started to put my science and evolution writing. Once more developed I will set up for Paypal donations, etc. Basically one is very focused and one isn’t.

  5. You’re welcome to call me a sheeple anytime and I won’t take offense. I love all your ideas. If you decide to do ads, you might consider making a discounted spot one of your prizes. The fun photos would be cool; you could even narrow it down into some of the examples you gave to give you a more concentrated sample.

  6. Just got what “sheeple” means… sorry it’s Monday I’m being thick! I think it’s quite a cool title, like being in a special club! Loads of good ideas too, like the idea of the book club. Btw, are you seeing my comments ok now?

I see your comments just great 🙂 Sheeple is a fun word, right? Sucks it’s used as a bad thing. Makes me sad lol

          1. Oh yes, sheep can bite pretty hard…my dad was a vet and brought an orphan lamb home which grew into quite a large sheep. It bit me, it bit the dog, then when it knocked my dad over and broke his ankle he decided it was time to re-home it at a petting zoo…

          2. Blair (The Shameful Sheep) Author

Wow! I didn’t know they were aggressive at all. But somehow, I’m still really jealous you had a lamb when you were a kid. I want one.

Thank you! It’s taking me a lot of focus and mental stamina to stick with it honestly. I appreciate it 🙂

The book club idea sounds great!
Yeah I can’t think of any ‘sheep’ related words without negative connotations. Like ‘herd’ or ‘sheeple’ has that whole ‘mindless follower’ connection. Is there a different word for wild sheep? Are there are rogue sheep, like lone wolves?
One thing I’ve seen re: book club stuffs is a good, detailed submission page. Something that says what you’re looking for and NOT looking for, and hopefully will keep you from being inundated with interest. Just thought I’d throw in my two cents!

Thank you! I’m not sure if there is a different word for wild sheep or anything like that. I’ll have to do some research on it later lol. Definitely going to make a submission page, thank you!

  8. Sheeple is cutesy and having spent quite a bit of time among actual sheep I have to say that the current usage isn’t that far off. I think calling us sheeple is fine for you because of the name of your blog. Basically you’re a sheep so you get a pass kinda deal. Same reasoning behind the whole idea that female friends can use a certain B word for each other etc…

    1. Blair (The Shameful Sheep) Author

I totally get it. And I like where you’re going with it lol. I like the word a lot, and I have a feeling I’ll use it again at some point 🙂

Mingalings haha. That’s perfect. I think I might use sheeple a couple more times. Maybe I’ll start a movement to make it a positive word haha

  9. The book club is a really great idea. I think many authors (myself included) will take you up on it. You could have a nice little business going.
I’m one of those people who only remembers to bring a camera to events or holidays half the time, and then when I do, I rarely remember to actually take the pictures. But I would vote, even though I probably wouldn’t have anything to submit.

    1. Blair (The Shameful Sheep) Author

I’m the exact same way with pictures 🙂 I don’t bring cameras, I just use my phone… but I’m not a big fan of having it out in public taking pictures of everything. I love photos though lol.

  10. I love the idea for funny photos…you could keep that fresh and reuse it by having a theme for the humor each time. Also you could do the same thing with a fill in the blank prompt. Like, The funniest thing I ever saw was * blank* and let people vote. (That was totally lame, but you get the idea.

I was somewhat interested in your book ad until you said you’ll post that on weekends when you don’t normally post etc. That means it won’t really hit your audience, so to me, wouldn’t be worth it…but then others might not catch that nuance. 😉

Actually a pretty good point, although it doesn’t seem to have a big effect on my views. A lot of people wait until the weekend to read! You’re right though…. It would be unfair. I think I’ll move it to a weekday and do my own post on a weekend 🙂

That sounds like the perfect sheep to be my blog’s mascot. Robbing people for their sandwiches. Amazing lol

          2. Next time I go up The Valleys I will get some photos. They hang out in gangs and surround your car until you get out and give them some food and it better be good. The wild ponies are sweet snd are happy with bits of apple but the sheep want sandwiches and pies and stuff.

  12. Sheeple? AMAZING! That picture of the men dresses in puff like sheep? Double AMAZING! Ideas for contests and hosting a book page and interviews?…I think you get where I’m going haha!

I have a photographer friend who does give-a-ways, and she does it by giving each entrant a number and then a random number generator picks the winner. Just another way to incorporate prizes into your blog in addition to voting.

All around great ideas and I can’t wait to see what comes next! I know that Roy has stated that it’s Sheople, but maybe to keep the negative connotations away, you can spell it as Sheeple 😉 I’m proud to be one of your Sheeples!

    1. Blair (The Shameful Sheep) Author

Yeah, I like it! Sheeple seems better than Sheople to me for some reason lol. Maybe that changes it a little. I think I’ll use it. Thanks for the idea 🙂

  14. I’m not surprised you like us bloggers better than who you know in person. We’re not only at our best behavior, you’re free to imagine us as kindred souls – practically perfect in every way. Well, not to worry! If we ever meet in person, I’m sure you’ll find me perfectly contemptible.

  20. A few years ago, I did a postcard ID contest. I had a bunch of old postcards and would post a picture of one with a question, like where the heck is this, or what are those people doing?. I gave a prize to the first person to figure it out. The prize was usually a collage or drawing I did. It was pretty popular, but I ran out of interesting postcards after a time.

More recently I added a podcast, and did 7 or 8 of them. I’m going to do another soon featuring an interview with a banjo builder. I also added a story site (that actually gets a hit or two every week or so).

I’ve also had guest bloggers from time to time and I liked that a lot, but there didn’t seem to be so much interest in it.

Curiously enough, the number of people who visit my little corner of the cyber-universe has stayed constant (fairly low…visitors change over time but the numbers stay constant), but what I find kind of weird is not many of my visitors comment, compared to other blogs. I’m not sure if that is good or bad. What IS good is that I’ve made some friends along the way. I’ve met 4 bloggers in person who I made friends with on our blogs – It had never occurred to me that might happen.

When I started blogging it was because I heard about blogs and that you could actually quickly publish and I thought this seems like fun, maybe I ought to try it. I’ve never had a plan or a goal with my blog. I never even thought about whether or not I should keep the thing around. I just kept posting stuff that interested me. In the old days it was Mister Anchovy’s and when I abandoned Blogger for WordPress, I sent Mister Anchovy packing and changed the name to 27th Street. Last I heard, Mister Anchovy was wandering the world with a robe and a begging bowl. After several years of blogging, I still don’t have a plan. I don’t want to “do something” with my blog (what would I do?). God forbid I don’t want to have ads or sponsors nor shill for products or anything like that. I think I’m just happy to have a little corner of the internet and if I continue to have a little community who for some strange reason choose to keep coming back, that’s pretty fantastic.

I like your idea of the postcards, that’s great 🙂 I wish I had something fun like that to do. I think it’s normal to have more views than comments. I always have a significant difference, at least. So I hope that’s the norm lol. I wouldn’t mind being sponsored or selling a product if it had the same theme as my blog. I’ve been approached to sell/advertise on a post for a fishing magazine… like, how random would THAT be on my humor blog? Ha.

Woo! Thanks. I’ve been writing a book, but I’m afraid to self publish as well lol. I know the chances of having a publisher want my writing are low, so it makes me nervous. It’s a scary venture.

  22. I understand the point behind sheeple, but knowing what I know about sheep it’s a really ridiculous insult. Sheep are hardly the only animal that’s easily lead to slaughter, arguably cows are even easier. Setting that aside you’re not the only one who’s thought of your followers as Sheeple, I’m rather partial to the moniker myself.
